UK80 BSc (Hons) Psychology with Counselling and Psychotherapy Manchester Metropolitan University
Counselling and psychotherapy are terms for a wide variety of evidence-based talking and listening approaches which apply established theories to promote psychological change.
Alongside the main discipline of psychology, each year of this course offers specialist units where you’ll study the fields of counselling and psychotherapy.
Our course also covers all core elements of psychological study as required by the British Psychological Society (BPS), from lifespan development, neuropsychology, and research methods, to social and critical, and abnormal psychology.
In addition to theory, you’ll also learn basic practical counselling skills. Some of these skills may include how to offer acceptance, empathic listening, questioning techniques and how to develop practitioner resilience. You’ll mostly learn through role-play in pairs and small groups, listening, observing and giving feedback to your peers.
Our degree courses are accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
As a psychology graduate, there are a diverse range of career paths you could take. You might decide to pursue further training and qualifications, working towards a career in professional psychology, such as counselling psychology or clinical psychology. There is also the option to pursue a career in the counselling, psychotherapy or mental health fields for which you would again need further qualifications. If you decided not to follow a psychology-related career, you could still use your transferrable skills to work in other settings such as education or the corporate sector.
Graduating with a 2:2 honours classification or higher, and passing your dissertation project, you’ll be eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) from the British Psychological Society (BPS). This is the first step towards becoming a chartered psychologist.
