UK80 BA (Hons) Primary Education with Mathematics with QTS Manchester Metropolitan University
Our three-year course supports you to consider questions such as these, along with so many more. We prepare you to teach the wider primary school curriculum, as well as developing the specialist mathematics knowledge you’ll need to teach primary aged school children. You'll understand how children learn key concepts within mathematics, the barriers they may face and how you can nurture and develop their understanding.
You’ll study English, mathematics, science and computing in children’s education as well as developing your knowledge to teach a broad and balanced curriculum of foundation subjects alongside this. Some of the practical skills you’ll learn include creative ways to teach reading, writing and expressive arts, how to plan lessons, and how to write learning plans for your class.
As you progress you'll have the opportunity to focus more on discrete mathematics units, exploring innovative ways to teach mathematics, as well as improving your subject knowledge. These units help to prepare you to lead mathematics education in your school and support your colleagues in teaching mathematics throughout your future teaching career.
Placements are a very important part of this course. On your placements, some of your day-to-day tasks might be teaching English, mathematics and foundation subjects (such as history and art), supporting children in the playground, and liaising with parents or teaching professionals such as speech and language therapists who work with the children in your class.
After graduating, you’ll have the opportunity to work in a range of educational roles and settings, such as early years, primary schools, learning support, inclusive education and special educational needs and develop skills to progress into management.
There is a national shortage of mathematics teachers and primary teachers with specialist mathematics expertise. We have established links with a thriving community of specialist mathematics teachers in primary schools.
We focus on generating primary education graduates who are skilled teachers, highly employable, resilient and knowledgeable. Our graduates are driven to make a significant contribution to education, are able to enhance the quality of learning for children and confidently take on roles within the leadership and management structures of schools.
Alternatively, you may choose to continue your professional development to masters or doctorate level. The Faculty of Education offers masters courses, with awards in: education, inclusive education and educational leadership as well as our new Masters in Teaching (MTeach) course, which is specifically designed for newly qualified teachers.
