UK80 BA (Hons) International Relations with a minor route language Manchester Metropolitan University
This combined honours course will give you the practical language skills whilst also developing your understanding of the social and cultural environment in which it is spoken. You’ll also gain an appreciation of how states, international organisations, and non-state actors interact on the global stage.
International Relations
You’ll use theories and models to best explain and understand power in the world, why the world is the way it is, and how we can change it. Looking at all levels, from individuals to whole global systems, you’ll question what we think we know, what we think matters, and how we can develop a better world. Supported by knowledgeable and passionate staff, you’ll start by looking at the core critical and emancipatory theories of international relations and their underlying methods.
Minor languages available
French, Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Italian (2021 entry only). Look at the 'Course Details' below for more information on our minor languages and levels available.
Studying a combined honours degree gives you the opportunity to improve your employability options by developing skills and knowledge in two subjects.
Language skills can be applied in a wide variety of careers, from teaching and translating/interpreting to business and management, finance, charity and community work.
Our international relations graduates have gone into a variety of careers in the public sector (housing and education departments in councils, the police, the military), government social research roles, utilities, the financial sector, recruitment, journalism, media, non-governmental organisations, and charities.
There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study MA International Relations and Global Communications, where we have a growing, innovative research cluster focusing on digital society and culture. Or some go on to join our Postgraduate Linguistics Network, with masters in: MA TESOL and Applied Linguistics, MA Linguistics and English Language and MA Linguistics and English Studies, all three of which will equip you with the valuable communication skills needed to work in culturally diverse environments.
