Over the three years of study at Keele, you will learn to evaluate key educational concepts, theories and issues of policy in a systematic way. You will learn about their applications to understand ways in which Mathematics can be learnt and taught. In your first year, you will study core material which could include calculus and algebra.
In subsequent years you can begin to tailor your programme according to your own strengths and interests. You will have the opportunity to explore a range of specialisms which may include pure or applied mathematics, probability and modelling.
Education topics include a wide range of areas such as the sociology of Education, for example, how race, class and gender can impact on pupils’ educational outcomes. There are also opportunities to study such topics such as how children learn, the history of education and play in the early years.
When you graduate, you might choose to apply for a PGCE to become a Maths teacher. There are a range of other related opportunities, including jobs in banking, the civil service, computing, financial services and retail. You may also wish to pursue a further academic career and become a researcher or a policy analyst. During your studies, you may wish to learn a foreign language and gain an enhanced degree title or opt for a year abroad to enhance your CV.
