Teaching English as a Foreign Language gives you the opportunity to travel the world. A degree in English Language and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) may take you into a wide array of different contexts, from teaching air-traffic controllers in Madrid, to advertising executives in Rio de Janeiro, or university students in China. There are opportunities for working with charities and NGOs in the developing parts of the world, and there are also opportunities in the UK, as more and more people come from around the world to study, work and live here.
English is the official language of 54 separate countries, spoken by around 400 million people as their first language and used by around a billion more. Its importance socially, culturally, politically and economically fuels the demand for people certified to teach English throughout the world.
Successful completion of this course will allow you to attain an internationally recognised English as a Foreign Language teaching qualification (either the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) or Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)) while at the same time studying for a degree in English Language. As a trained specialist, you will have the opportunity to travel the globe and experience new cultures, while helping people to learn the English language and skills for effective communication.
Coventry is an authorised Cambridge Assessment English Centre, which enables you the opportunity to gain the professional and internationally recognised Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) or Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT), in addition to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) degree subject to you meeting a certain grade and criteria.
There are hundreds of language schools throughout the UK, as well as opportunities to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL) in places like Japan, China and other East Asian countries, the Middle East, parts of Eastern Europe, Spain, Italy and Germany.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be in a position to start applying immediately to a range of potential employers, including commercial language schools, education and development organisations, government departments, multinational companies, The British Council and a whole host of international volunteer organisations and NGOs.
Alternatively, if you decide not to teach, successfully completing this course should have prepared you for any career that involves the use of language and particularly those professions where communication dominates: the media and cultural industries, primary and secondary education, public relations, marketing and advertising.
