If you’re looking for a lifelong, challenging and exciting career, teaching may be for you. We were rated Outstanding in our most recent OFSTED inspection (2015/16) and we offer our students an exceptional training experience. As well as Computing, the PGCE Secondary award, with QTS, is also available in Art and Design, Biology (Sciences), English, Geography, History, Mathematics and Physical Education.

By incorporating current trends and issues into our teaching, you will be prepared as best as possible for the classroom. You will explore how to teach a wide a range of assessments, including Core Maths a relatively new Level 3 qualification. You will be supported to teach using Mastery – inspired by the Shanghai Mathematics Teacher Exchange – and benefit from our links with local Mastery Champions, Maths Hub “GLOW” and the Royal Institution Maths Masterclasses.

Your subject knowledge days, delivered in small groups to allow more individual support, will cover 10 broad themes throughout the year: Algebra, assessment, different groups, geometry and measures, lesson planning, number, policy and pedagogy, probability and statistics, ratio and proportion, resources and tools.

We will support you to develop your use of technology in teaching, including e-teaching and e-homework and provide detailed preparation for teaching students with SEND, including dyscalculia.

You’ll be supported by a range of experienced professionals, both during school placements and by academic staff at the university. The programme aims to help you become an engaging and effective teacher within the 11–16 age range, and provides the input and opportunities that could enable you to teach post-16. Successfully completing this PGCE course will enable you to teach at Secondary age, as well as Primary and A Level.

Graduates from this course can go on to work in secondary school teaching.
