On this degree you’ll study the United States from a literary, cultural and historical perspective. Through the exploration of great novels, landmark historical events, film, comic books, photographs and paintings, you will gain a detailed knowledge of the key moments and debates that have shaped the United States. You’ll get to grips with race, gender and civil liberties in America and examine how US power has been projected around the world. You’ll consider the nation’s relationship with the history of the American West. And you’ll delve into anything from popular culture to the counterculture and the avant-garde.

You’ll also have the option of applying to spend one semester of your second year in the US to gain invaluable first-hand experience of the country you’re studying. 

Whatever you choose, this degree will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how America has shaped and been shaped by the world around us. You’ll learn about the relationship between culture and politics, while gaining an in-depth knowledge of the forces that transform societies and forge nations. The interdisciplinary approach at the heart of American studies will not only provide you with the analytical tools to better comprehend the United States, but also to grapple with the key political issues that shape our society today.

PLACEMENT YEAR AND STUDY ABROAD

You’ll have the opportunity to apply to spend the second semester of your second year studying in the US. Our Year Abroad programme has been running for more than 30 years and is one of the largest in the UK for American Studies. Your time abroad will be an invaluable academic and cultural experience, one that most students consider to be the highlight of their time at university.
