NZ03 Master of Landscape Architecture Lincoln University

    Lincoln University offers two separate Master of Landscape Architecture (Taught) programmes:

    240-credit MLA programme (by examination)

    This two year programme is designed as a first professional degree in Landscape Architecture for students with an undergraduate university degree in any discipline, including unaccredited degrees associated with Landscape Architecture. The degree consists of ten Master’s level courses and a dissertation (small research project). The degree will teach you all the knowledge and skills required to practice Landscape Architecture. Students can only start this degree Semester 1 (late February).

    This degree is accredited by the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), meaning graduates can become registered professional Landscape Architects who are highly sought-after within both the public and private sectors throughout New Zealand and internationally. Graduates will be prepared for employment as professional landscape architects, both within New Zealand and internationally, and will demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for NZILA and IFLA accreditation.

    120-credit MLA programme (by examination)

    This one year programme is only open to students with an accredited Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) degree or Bachelor of Landscape Architecture Graduate entry degrees (BLA (Graduate entry) who wish to pursue more advanced and specialized Master’s level Landscape Architecture study. The degree requires students to pass four Master’s level courses and a dissertation (small research project). Following their MLA students may be eligible to continue their studies at the PhD level. Students can start either Semester 1 (late February), or Semester 2 (mid-July).

    Please note: A 120-credit Master of Landscape Architecture (Research) programme, which consists of a thesis only (a larger research project) is also available to those who want to only pursue research in support of the profession of Landscape Architecture.

    240-credit MLA programme

    To be considered for entry students must have:

    • Achieved a minimum of 2nd class division 1 honours (or minimum average of 70% in their 300 level or higher courses and in their final year overall) in their previous university degree, and

    • Submitted a portfolio. No prior qualification in art or design is required, but students should be able to demonstrated design-related skills and creativity. The folio may contain landscape architecture drawings, representational drawings, paintings, photography or technical drawings. It can also include drawings that demonstrate computer graphic skills.

    • Demonstrated basic computer graphic skills in Vectorworks or AutoCAD. This can be demonstrated either in the portfolio or with a certificate of completion of an online course.

    120-credit MLA programme

    To be eligible for entry students must have:

    • Achieved a minimum of 2nd class division 1 honours (or minimum average of 70% in their 300 level or higher courses and in their final year overall) in their Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree, and

    Note: One or two semester bridging programmes (Post graduate certificate in landscape studies or Post graduate diploma in landscape studies) are available for students with average BLA grades below 70%.
