If you are seeking to make the transition from a science or mathematics-based career to become an engineer, or if you already have an engineering degree and would like to change paths to a different specialisation, the Master of Professional Engineering offers an accredited qualification that will enable you to practise in Australia and overseas. The biomedical specialisation covers biomaterials engineering, applied tissue engineering, advanced engineering materials and computational fluid dynamics.
This degree will also help you develop the sound communication, management and decision-making capabilities necessary to interpret and discuss complex issues in your area of specialisation. The program will provide you with the engineering professional practice and research skills that lead to recognition as an Australian graduate engineer. Your qualifications will be recognised internationally through the Washington Accord of the International Engineering Alliance.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Biomedical engineers are employed in universities, in industry, in hospitals, in research facilities of educational and medical institutions, in teaching, and in government regulatory agencies. They often serve a coordinating or interfacing function, using their background in both the engineering and medical fields. In industry, they may create designs where an in-depth understanding of living systems and of technology is essential. Government positions often involve product testing and safety, as well as establishing safety standards for devices. In the hospital, the biomedical engineer may provide advice on the selection and use of medical equipment, as well as supervising its performance testing and maintenance. In research institutions, biomedical engineers supervise laboratories and equipment, and participate in or direct research activities in collaboration with other researchers with such backgrounds as medicine, physiology, and nursing.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION
The Master of Professional Engineering (Biomedical) has been accorded full accreditation at the level of Professional Engineering by the industry governing body, Engineers Australia.
