Apply linguistic skills and know-how in today’s globalised professional and community settings. This new course has a special emphasis on diversity in the language of professional and social engagement.
You will learn core concepts of language and culture, and gain skills in applying them in areas ranging from business to education, teaching English to speakers of other languages, community relations, media, medicine, and law.
This program offers exciting opportunities to deepen your knowledge of linguistics and cross-cultural communication, and develop new skills as you put this knowledge into practice. Analyse the forms and functions of language, both spoken and written, and study how language connects with visual contexts – gesture, image, film and sound, and digital platforms.
You will develop a critical awareness of the connections between language, culture and society. Gain experience and skills in professional practice relating to the application of cross-cultural and linguistic knowledge and skills, and pursue research as a foundation for higher degree research.
Graduates will be equipped to address a range of real-world issues in language and communication, and work in areas as diverse as public relations in business, literacy in multilingual education, community engagement, teaching English to speakers of other languages, legal language, news discourse, and doctor/patient communication in health settings.
