The MA Social Work programme offers a dynamic two-year course which equips students with the requisite skills, knowledge and capabilities to graduate as a professional Social Work practitioner ready to make a difference within the contemporary social care arena

Social Work continues to be a key professional role within UK society, seeking to promote social justice, address inequality and facilitate self-determination in those individuals and families requiring formal support. The MA Social Work programme aims to prepare students for professional practice through a 2-year Postgraduate course which blends key academic modules and rigorous placement experiences which focus on required professional standards appropriate to the delivery of assessment and support for those in need within our communities.

Optional Work Placement Year/ Opportunities Abroad

All students have two practice placements which are 5 full-time days per week, currently these are 70-days and 100-days in length.

These are core mandatory elements on the programme and students must pass these elements (in addition to all other modules) to receive the full Social Work award.

Placement learning opportunities can be outside of Northampton to cover diverse placement opportunities to meet your learning and practice needs.

You will need to be able to travel independently. Placements are located within a 60 mile radius of the University.

• A relevant undergraduate degree (ideally a 2:1 classification) or other recognised equivalent qualification. A Pass or 3rd will not be considered.
• Applicants are advised to discuss the relevance of their Degree in their personal statement.
• All applicants must have GCSE’s grade C/4 or above in English Language and Math or certified equivalencies Key skills Level 2 will be accepted, regardless of other qualifications. Applicants without these will not be considered.
• Applicants must have 6 months of relevant social care or social work focused work experience, ideally 2/3 days a week (and be able to evidence this). This could be paid or voluntary work.

Students yet to graduate should ideally provide an academic reference (although a professional reference would be acceptable).

Students who have already graduated should provide a professional reference.

All offers of a place on the programme are subject to:

• satisfactory Occupational Health Screening (OH),
• satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) report (this does not mean an applicant must have a ‘clear’ DBS. However any DBS issues will need to be discussed prior to your interview (where possible) and full enrolment on to the programme) and;
• successful interview by the University.
