We provide an 'academic apprenticeship model' where you’ll be fully supported from being a strong Master's level student to becoming a successful doctoral student and ultimately to a university academic.
This programme has a 1+3 structure. In year 1 (the ‘taught stage’) you’ll take a series of postgraduate modules to help prepare for the doctoral thesis (years 2, 3, 4, the ‘research stage’) and also for a career in higher education. These year 1 modules are focussed on important career skills such as:
- academic writing for publication
- teaching in higher education settings
- research methodology
Additionally, you’ll develop expertise in a broader field of research by taking modules from one of our three research pathways.
- Social Interaction
- Teaching English as a Second or Other Language (TESOL)
- Cross-Cultural Communication

A 2:1 honours degree and a master's degree with at least 60%, or international equivalent, in a related subject.
