    The course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to complement your clinical training and we aim to provide:

    • knowledge to support the clinical treatment of orthodontic cases, including simple and complex cases appropriate for specialist practitioner level
    • an evidence base for orthodontics and the skills required to appraise the evidence base
    • applied research within orthodontics

    The course provides theoretical teaching to support the development of an orthodontic specialist. We provide a comprehensive seminar programme incorporating the theoretical and diagnostic elements of specialist knowledge, and the opportunity to carry out a research project allied to our research strategy. Our course includes:

    • normal and abnormal development of the dentition
    • tooth movement and facial orthopaedics
    • orthodontic materials and biomechanics
    • airway, craniofacial development and malocclusion
    • diagnostic procedures
    • biological sciences relevant to orthodontics
    • an overview of multidisciplinary orthodontics

    You must have:

    • a dental degree that is recognised by the General Dental Council (GDC) and UK National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) for at least temporary registration
    • at least two years' experience post-graduation

    Clinical access requirements

    International students - your clinical placement will be within the Newcastle Dental Hospital clinics. You must have been granted clinical access by the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust before starting this placement. Failure to obtain the necessary access will result in your automatic withdrawal from the course

    Immunisation requirements

    • you must be immunised against Hepatitis B
    • you must not have any disease which would constitute a hazard to your patients
    • we strongly advise that you check your Hep B immunisation status and confirm that you are not infective with TB, Hep B, Hep C or HIV
    • you will require Occupational Health clearance by the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust prior to commencing clinical work. You will need to liaise with the Trust’s Human Resources Department to comply with these requirements. Compliance with these requirements is essential to maintain student registration with the University
