The Housing and Community Planning MA provides students with a critical understanding of the contemporary challenges associated with housing and community planning, including their interaction with social, economic, environmental and political issues. Students will develop a range of practical and analytical skills and experience that will enable them to pursue careers related to housing, planning, and the built environment.

This programme, which has specialist accreditation from the Royal Town Planning Institute, is focused on developing high level student understanding and experience of housing and community planning practice, and its interaction with various societal challenges. The programme consists of core modules related to planning for housing and home and community planning techniques, in addition to learning that places this in the context of theoretical and practical spatial planning challenges.

The programme has a strong practical emphasis, including a field class and a major 30 credit professional practice module where learning and skills are applied to real-world work-based scenarios. This reflects the programme's commitment to the development of skills and experience that can strengthen graduate employability.

Students completing the programme, which has specialist accreditation from the Royal Town Planning Institute, will take up jobs in a wide range of fields. We anticipate that many will take up jobs related to the core specialisms – housing and community planning – which may involve working in public, private and third sector organisations, including local authorities, consultancies, charities, and housing associations. In addition to specialist knowledge, the programme will give students a broad understanding of planning practice in the UK and internationally which will enable them to take up careers in areas of planning practice external to the core specialisms. The programme will equip students with a broad range of skills transferable to other occupations and to careers both in the UK and internationally, including written and verbal communication, digital fluency, and research.
