UK116 PGCE Secondary Physical Education University of East Anglia
Our one-year, full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Secondary Physical Education programme will equip you with the skills, experience and knowledge you need to teach physical education to pupils aged between 11 and 16 – with the option of additional experience of A-level physical education teaching. Upon successful completion of your PGCE, you’ll graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 90 Master’s credits.
You’ll spend your time on the course exploring the pedagogy of teaching the full range of national curriculum activity areas for physical education. You’ll get to grips with the range of physical education qualifications available, and you’ll learn to prepare pupils for GCSE and A-level physical education, as well as vocational qualifications such as leadership awards in the physical education curriculum.
As part of our programme you’ll also have the opportunity to take both the British Gymnastics Secondary Teacher's Award and the Rugby Football Union’s 'Rugby Union in Secondary Schools' course. We also offer a range of subject knowledge enhancement opportunities with options to gain national qualifications, including:
Lawn Tennis Association Secondary Teacher’s Award
Badminton England Secondary Teacher’s Award
Rounders England Teacher’s Award
British Gymnastics Trampolining Teacher’s Award
England Basketball Teacher’s Award
England Basketball Level 1
Refereeing and Level 1 Table Officiating
England Handball Secondary Teacher’s Award
Please note these are subject to NGB return to play guidelines as a result of COVID-19. Secondary schools are demanding but tremendously rewarding environments to work in. You’ll be teaching pupils as they mature from early adolescence to adulthood. And our programme will teach you how to make an effective contribution to the work of the school beyond PE.
Our graduates go on to have great success in their careers. Alongside your PGCE, you’ll gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and 90 Master’s credits.
Career opportunities for qualified teachers are more diverse than ever before. Within a few years of joining the profession you could find yourself being promoted into a role with subject leadership and pastoral responsibilities, and progressing into senior leadership roles after experience of middle management.
We are committed to supporting you beyond your training year and work closely with schools and Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) induction bodies to identify and provide support during your NQT year.
