AU41 Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology - Bachelor of Science University of Tasmania
Information and communications technology (ICT) has been driving profound methodological changes in science over the last few decades. A significant part of scientific enquiry now relies on computational approaches to complement theory and experiment. This combined degree merges the study of ICT with any of the emerging or traditional areas of science. The degree provides students with an opportunity to gain qualifications that will provide more breadth and offer wider opportunities for employment.
The Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology delivers knowledge and skills across Information Technology (IT), Computer Science (CS) and Information Systems (IS) with both a theoretical and practical focus. It develops technological understanding and skills that are in high demand world-wide, plus builds project management and other business soft-skills that make you an ICT professional.
The Bachelor of Science (BSc) is a multi-disciplinary degree which offers both variety and flexibility in subject choice and specialisation. It provides an effective entry into employment as skills obtained by science graduates problem-solving, critical thinking, team work, specialised subject knowledge and understanding are highly sought after and valued by employers.
Work placement
All students undertake projects in their third year of their major via the ICT Project core knowledge unit that are supplied by a real industry client involving a significant open-ended and wide-ranging challenge, drawing on knowledge and capability from their earlier studies.
The project is based on a real life problem, and allows the students to experience the type of professional experiences that a graduate is likely to encounter following graduation. This learning experience facilitates a smooth transition to employment by providing real-world experience while you study.
Career Opportunities with ICT
Graduates often enter technical positions, such as software programmer, network administrator, systems or business analyst, and web design/development. These allow you to apply your skills and knowledge while building on the industry experience already gained from your time studying with us.
Technical roles progress to management and leadership positions, typically with 3-5 years’ experience, setting you up in a career for life that goes wherever you want it to. These include project management, business analyst, testing/network/systems manager, database administrator, security specialist, and much more.
Career Opportunities with Science
While science career options are wide and varied, they typically fall into three main categories:
At the University of Tasmania, in addition to specialised scientific knowledge and skills, our focus is on giving you the practical and professional skills that are highly sought after by all employers – creative problem-solving, working in a team environment and flexibility of thinking. We teach you how to think, not what to think.
A career in science can be in any industry on earth. It will come to where your passion takes you.
Professional Recognition
The University will seek accreditation of the Bachelor of ICT component of the course with the Australian Computer Society after the first cohort of students has graduated. The Australian Computer Society requires students to have graduated from a course before universities can seek accreditation.
You can speak to a course advisor about the majors or units you need to complete in the Bachelor of Science to be eligible for individual professional memberships of science based groups and organisations
