AU09 Bachelor of Science (Astronomy and Astrophysics) Macquarie University

  • THÔNG TIN CHUNG

Astronomy examines the universe via the light received from it. Astrophysics uses the laws of physics to interpret astronomical phenomena, and determine the origin and evolution of the cosmos. Professionals in this field explore our understanding of celestial objects – such as planets, stars and galaxies – and the methods through which we have gained this insight.

In this specialisation, you’ll develop the ability to independently and creatively solve problems by applying core physical principles, and relevant mathematical and computational techniques. You’ll learn to manipulate data sets using standard astronomical software packages. And you’ll be able to provide analytical solutions to astrophysical problems through the manipulation of equations describing physical principles and by developing customised computer programs.

    Key Features

    • You’ll have access to optical and radio telescopes at the Macquarie University Observatory – the only fully operational on-campus observatory in Australia.
    • Our close links with CSIRO’s Division of Astronomy and Space Science, and the Macquarie University node of Australian Astronomical Optics, will benefit your study experience and boost your career prospects through authentic research experiences beyond conventional academic boundaries.
    • From your first year, you’ll be able to participate in unique research projects in modern labs designed to foster collaboration and cutting-edge research.
    • In addition to in-depth study in astronomy and astrophysics, you can take mathematics, statistics or coding in your first year to give you the modern foundational skills relevant to future workforce needs.
    • In your final year, you’ll undertake a work-integrated learning activity with a partner organisation to help prepare you for real workplace scenarios.
    • You’ll learn how to apply for scientific-based jobs and prepare for interviews; and you’ll develop presentation, project management and other critical skills that will help you to secure your dream career.
    • Macquarie is ranked number one in Sydney for teaching quality and overall graduate satisfaction in science (QILT, 2017).
