    This major will enhance your understanding of contemporary approaches to counselling and their applications in the workplace and community. It will provide exposure to current theoriesof counselling and psychotherapy, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based approaches and ethical practice. Although this major will not qualify you as a professional counsellor or psychologist, it will help you to develop the understanding and sensitivity required for working with people who need help in dealing with personal and emotional issues. The knowledge and understanding you acquire from this major will assist you in obtaining employment in a diverse range of human and community health and welfare contexts. Studies will focus on theories of counselling; therapeutic approaches and strategies; developmental challenges faced by individuals and families across the lifespan; human relationship dynamics; health psychology; psychological aspects of interpersonal communication, conflict, and conflict resolution; ethical practice and cultural sensitivity.

    •You will gain core foundational knowledge of psychological theories and methods.

    •Options available in second and third year will allow you to focus on more applied aspects of psychological knowledge.

    •Specialist units on counselling theory and practice are available in second and third year.

    •The development of interpersonal skills and sensitivity using techniques such as simulation and role-playing is a focus throughout.
