    The Master of History provides the theoretical grounding and practical skills you need for the advanced study of history, plus the opportunity to tailor a program according to your interests. If you’re a secondary school teacher, you are able to focus on areas in the national curriculum for history.

    A Master of History will advance your career in government, industry, finance, politics, public relations, the services sector, teaching, the arts or in any profession requiring good management of diverse information, analytical and writing skills.

    Learning Outcomes

    1. Review, analyse, and synthesise historical materials, knowledge and theory;
    2. Exercise critical thinking in historical theory while developing understanding of historical interpretations and debates;
    3. Learn the technical skills needed to undertake independent historical research;
    4. Present a clear and coherent exposition of historical ideas and materials to a variety of audiences, and
    5. Undertake an independent research project.

    At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to most ANU programs is on a competitive basis. Therefore, meeting all admission requirements does not automatically guarantee entry.

    Applicants must present a Bachelor degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0

    • TOEFL: Paper-based score: 570 (min. 4.5 in TWE). Internet-based score: 80 (min. 20 reading and writing, 18 in speaking and listening
    • IELTS Academic:  6.5 overall (min. 6.0 in each subtest)
    • PTE Academic: 64 overall (min. 55 in each of the communicative skills)
    • Cambridge CAE: 176 overall (min.169 in each subtest)
