The Diploma of Languages prepares students for the increasingly multilingual and international life of the 21st century. You will be taken on a language learning journey which is designed to engage you with the written, oral and cultural aspects of your chosen language or languages.

You can choose to study a wide selection of languages, many of which are not available at any other University in Australia.

This diploma will suit you if you are interested in working for organisations or businesses that deal with non-English speaking countries, or a government career including foreign aid, or if you want to work in a non-English speaking country when you graduate.

Graduates may find work in international relations, diplomacy, trade, national security and strategy, translation, language teaching, tourism, development and many other fields.

Learning Outcomes

1. communicate proficiently and confidently in the principal studied language 
2. identify the structure and uses of the principal language studied 
3. demonstrate an understanding of the societies and cultures of the principal language studied, and its socio-historical context 
4. construct a schema of the connections between the principal language studied and its geographical, social and cultural origins 
5. recognise the importance of intercultural communication. 

Applicants must have either completed recognized upper secondary studies to the required standard and recognised by ANU as comparable to Australian Year 12 or completed at least one year of tertiary study to the required standard.

• TOEFL: Paper-based score: 550 (min. 4.0 in TWE). Internet-based score: 68 (min.18 reading and writing)
• IELTS Academic:  6.0 overall (min. 5.5 in each subtest)
• PTE Academic: 57 overall (min. 50 in each of the communicative skills) 
• Cambridge CAE: 169 overall (min.162 in each subtest)
